The Brat Fights the Fat

February 28, 2006

Is it really only Tuesday?

I dragged my ass out of bed this morning and got my workout in. Not only that, but I fought the fear demon and won. See, I discovered last fall that I really enjoy running (who knew!), but everytime I started to make some progress and see some results I would have a setback. I was just learning to run and did all the right things. Bought the proper shoes. Joined a Running Room Clinic on learning to run. Started slow (run 1 min, walk 2) and slowly built up (run 2, walk 1). The first clinic, on week 3, I got a knee injury and was told to no running for 3 weeks. Of course, the class went on without me and I had to drop out.

Once my knees healed and while I was waiting for the next class, I started running on the athletic track near the high school. Started back at scratch and slowly began to build back up. I was so excited! The next RR clinic came and I rejoined. Feeling great, excited because I was no longer at the back of the class. By the second week, I started to develop shin splints. By the 3 week, I could barely walk. Back to the doctor (sorry, new to exercise.... I didn't even know what shin splints were, let alone what to do about them). Again, I had to wait and drop out of the clinic.

Since then, I've been almost afraid to try again. I know it's not logical and that the best thing I could do is get back on the horse, but in the back of my mind... what if I get hurt again? what if I just can't run? Well, this morning... I started running on the treadmill. Not as good as outside (but it's really cold outside at 6 am right now), but I did it. It felt good. I felt strong. The funny part... I meant to start back at the beginning (walk 2, run 1), but was still asleep this morning and mix my numbers up. Yup, I ran 2, walked 1. And I did it. And I can wait to do it again. Woohoo! Now, if only I was doing better with the whole water/sleep goal thing.

The End of the Scale Conspiracy

Well, I peaked at the scale this morning (I know I shouldn't, but I couldn't help it) and I was down 1.5 lbs (only 2.5 lbs to my next goal -- day without the kids, here I come)! 'Course that's probably due to yesterday's unpleasantness, but I'm hoping if I drink a ton of water today, I can keep the loss for tomorrow's WI.

I slept in this morning and completely missed my workout. *sigh* I will find a way to fit it in tonight. I'm doing too well with my exercising to let myself get off track now.

Lasagna BAD!

Went to the inlaws for my BIL's birthday dinner. Had lasagna. Lasagna + Garlic Toast + IBS = BAD! Actually it wouldn't have been that bad, but I also have a medical condition that can cause me to faint and have seizure-like activity in certain circumstances. Unfortunately, intense pain is one of the triggers, so when the cramping hit... Now, with the fainting thing, if I can lie down before I faint, then I can circumvent the fainting. Hard to do when you also have to go to the bathroom. Sorry, not a nice topic. I'll change the subject now.

My son has a new word and it's my new favourite word. We were watching TV and he saw a volcano erupting. "Look Mom, it's a FUCKano!" Can't you just see all the potential uses for that word? "If you don't stop, I'll go fuckano on your ass!" We all had a hard time not laughing whenever he says it.

Did pretty good this week, and am hopeful for a good WI on Tuesday. I predict the fall of the great scale conspiracy and we're all going to lose a lot this week.

Finally Friday

So, I sacrificed one of my goals for the other one yesterday. Okay, what really happened is that I fell asleep well before I meant to and therefore didn't finish drinking my water. I did get 10 hours of sleep though!! I think my body is in shock. I'm going to try to drink 3L of water today to make up for yesterday.

Our appointment with the pediatrician for our daughter was moved up to this morning. The doc's not overly concerned about her height right now, but is very concerned about her hemogloben levels. There supposed to be around 115 and my daughter is at 52. Doc's put her on iron supplements 3 times a day for the next month and will redo her blood work and do a bunch more tests in 3 weeks. I'm sure it will be fine, but I'm not looking forward to more blood tests with her. She's already terrified of medical personnel.

Have a family dinner on Sunday. The menu is Lasagna. Great. I think I'm going to eat before I go and then just have a little portion of the lasagna.

Wendie Plan

I've seen a lot of comments recommending that the Super High Day should be as far from my WI as possible, so I've switched my days around. The other thing that I'm going to start doing is recording what I should have based on the Wendie plan and what I've actually eaten. It might help pin point problems. Though, one of them is that I'm not drinking nearly enough water.

My goal this week... drink a minimum of 2L of water every day!!

Went a little high in my points yesterday, mainly due to the rye and coke I had. I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I don't drink very often, but we had to take my daughter for blood tests yesterday and since she's only 22 months, it was very traumatic for all of us. The side benefit of the drink... had an unplanned nap on the couch for about an hour. My hb was wonderful and just let me doze while he took care of our daughter. Even with the nap, I went to bed early and got a good sleep (which is rare).

My second goal this week... get more than 6 hours of sleep each night!!

Will see how these changes affect my WI on Tuesday.

In the Groove

I'm actually starting to enjoy exercising... Well, okay not necessarily enjoying it when I'm doing it, but enjoy the sense of accomplishment and looking forward to doing it next time. I can see how exercise could become addictive. Who knew. As a self-proclaimed nerd and pretty much couch potato, the idea that I could voluntarily want to do exercise. It blows the mind. Go figure. The irony is that I married a jock, he played soccer for 25 years, basketball almost daily most of his life and now that he's gotten a bit out of shape, I'm the one encouraging him and showing him exercises. That's just too funny! I'm going to be the athlete and he's going to be the slug (not that I'm trying to challenge him or anything!).

My husband saw a t-shirt yesterday that said, "Fat people are harder to kidnap!" I don't know if I should be insulted or amused, so I'm going with amused and laughed hard at the image of two men in a black van drying to drag my ass of the street. (My husband was worried that everyone would think that he was saying the t-shirt was referring to me - he wasn't. Happy now, Scott?)

As I was telling Anne, I peaked at the scale this morning and was actually up a pound. My body seems to react to change a week or two behind, so I'm not letting it get to me, but it would have been nice to get closer to my next goal. I'm soooo looking forward to a day to my self... No kids... No housework... No bookkeeping... No laundry... Doesn't that sound heavenly?!?
I'll just drink more water and keep plugging away.

Maintain Land

Since I started the Wendie plan mid week, I'm not surprised that there were no results this morning. Especially since I had a couple of pretty high points days and used way more flex points than I usually do. I feel like I'm so close to my next goal, which is a big one for me (my pre-pregnancy weight), so I'm a little disappointed. I will just have to do better this week. Getting back on track with my exercises will help. I like Crackmonkee's idea of the calendar with the stickers and will give that a try to help keep me on track.

Purl has started her boot camp and it sounded like such a great way to really get my but in gear. So I looked on the internet to see if there were any boot camps around here. Turns out the closest is in Pitt Meadows. And since they run 5:45 am - 6:45 am, I would have to leave my house a 5 am and there's no way I' make it back by my 7:30 am work start time. I emailed the boot camp to see if they were planning any classes in Surrey or Langley (I don't mind the drive, I just don't want to get stuck on a bridge or ferry in rush hour). The email I got back was so snarky. She went on about how she has someone attending from Langley that gets up at 4 am to attend and then works at 9 and how sometimes you have to make sacrifices to get what you want or excuses and how it's obvious that I've made my choice. Apparently, unless I commute 2 hours and show up late every morning and attend her little boot camp, I'm just making excuses.
Great marketing/customer service tactic. Okay, enough ranting from me. I'm going to try to use her as motivation, you know the "I'll show her" kind of mentality, and push myself harder in my own workouts.

Morning Workout

One of my biggest challenges has been getting my AP's. I do okay with the food (most of the time), but have a problem with talking myself out of exercising. I'm trying out a motto from a friend of mine... "no excuses". So, even though I'd only gotten 3 hours of sleep, I dragged my lazy ass out of bed this morning and went to the gym. Did 20 minutes of cardio and then the evil exercises laid out by my personal trainer. I'm going to hurt tomorrow, but I'm really glad I did it. Before Christmas, I'd gotten into the habit of going to the gym in the mornings and after awhile it was almost automatic. I'm hoping that now that I've started again, I'll be able to go regularly again.

Family Day

Today was a lovely family day. Hb & I took the kids to see the Dinosaur Exhibit at Storeyum(a big underground museum in Gastown. It was a bit of journey (20 minute drive plus 30 minutes on the Skytrain each way) with two small kids, but we had a blast. Jordan loved the T-Rex. You can read more about it if you're interested on my other blog (My Kids in the Favourite Blogs section). I did well on points and avoided McDonalds and had Subway instead. Wendie Plan Day 2

Well, I had lots of fun yesterday with my Super High Day (SHD). Had a Rye and Coke in the evening, ate foods that I've been trying not to eat, and did it without guilt. Today was a little harder, but good too. Having to really concentrate on what I was eating (today was a low points day). Made some really good food choices. Tried another new WW recipe called Chicken and Vegetables. It was really good (I'll post a pic later). All in all a great day. Of course, a day where I get a nap is always a great day. My son had floor hockey and I stayed home with my daughter as it was her nap time. I put her down and snuck off for a nap. It was wonderful.

Joining Anne

Well, I decided to join Anne in trying the Wendie plan and see if it works for me. Should be interesting since today is supposed to be my Super High Day (which will be easy) and tomorrow should be a low day (which will be harder). I really want to reach my next goal sooner rather than later, so let's hope this gets my weight loss into high gear!

Good thing today's a SHD, since I woke up in the middle of the night and was once again seduced by the evil taco chips. Even knowing how many points they were didn't stop me this time. Evil, evil chips! This is why I asked my hb to get a small snack size bag. Then my indiscretion would be over and I wouldn't be tempted to finish off the bag. On a high note though, I didn't finish the bag; which is an improvement, I guess.

Playing badminton at lunch today with a group from work. I didn't think it would be when I signed up, but man is that a good workout. I actually had to sub out for water and rest the first time. I haven't played in a month and a half due to meetings, so I'm really looking forward to playing today. The little rivalry between finance and IT (the majority of the group fall into one of these two areas) also adds to the fun.

Chips Bad

Well, I was doing great with points yesterday... until I had some taco chips. I realize that chips are not a great snack choice, but who knew that 45 chips equals 11 points. 11 points!! What a waste!! That's more than I usually spend on a meal. Yikes!

Spent 20 minutes outside thanks to a fire drill at work. Forgot my coat. At least I live in beautiful BC or I'd have hypothermia. It was still freaking cold. I'm one of the members of the evacuation committee and hold a rold in the evacuations and when I wouldn't let them go back in until I got the all clear, somebody called me a Nazi. I realize he was just trying to be funny, but it upset me. My father is a retired Firefighter Captain. I just couldn't let people go in. Hell, I can't even sleep with my door open. Oh well. I'm not responsible for what others think of me, only of my own actions.

On a high note, has anyone tried the Sparkling Ice beverages? I'm drinking the black raspberry flavour and it's not bad. Made with Splenda. 6 Cal per bottle.

New Foolproof Diet

I found the perfect cure for feeling hungry... clean up someone elses puke. In the car, less than a block from our house my son let loose one of the biggest, grossest, smelliest pukes I have ever seen. It was so gross, I don't think I'll be able to eat for a while. It may just have cured me of my love of pasta too. I'll stop now rather than gross everyone out. I just hope some of the smell goes away before I have to drive to work tomorrow.

Just a quick post to say: I lost 0.5 lbs! Not a huge loss, but given my overindulgence on the weekend, I'm just glad it's not a gain. Plus, that brings me within 5 lbs of my next goal!

Have a great day everyone!

One of those Days

Found out late last night (i.e. too late to make any other arrangements) that my hb had to go to work early today. Usually, I leave the house early so that I can go to the gym and so that I can work hours that get me home by 4 pm. Which means, I was late getting to work, I didn't get my workout and my day has just been off ever since. Smacked the mirror on the van pulling out of the garage this morning. Have a friend in crisis that I don't know how to help (this is the hardest for me to deal with as she's a good friend and I feel helpless). I've got people flying in from Austria that are calling with questions and requests that I don't know if I can handle. I'm supposed to be doing some testing and have gotten nothing accomplished, but have to get it done because they're clearing the test server tomorrow. Argh! Okay, rant over. Doing well on points today (which is good 'cause I was bad on the weekend). Got to drink more water though.

Princess Pukes-A-Lot Strikes Again

My daughter has been throwing up all day. I was supposed to be going to a friend's surprise 30th birthday party tonight with my husband. A night away from the kids. Adult Conversation. Even some alcohol and bad food. Instead, I've been puked on 4 times today. Ate bad foods and got to stay home with Princess while everyone else is out having fun. Okay, enough pity party.

My abs are still sore, but in a good way. I'm past the point of thinking my trainer is evil and am actually looking forward to working out. I either need to buy a big ball for home tomorrow or I need to go to the gym at work and workout. Either way, I'm determined to do some exercise tomorrow.

On another note... Yesterday was a blast! It's been too long since I spent the day hanging out with a girlfriend. We shopped. Had lunch. Shopped. Went to see Brokeback Mountain. Shopped. It was wonderful. Spent too much money, but did better than I expected on points. All in all a great day.

Day off!

It's so nice to have a day off. I'm going for lunch with a friend and going to a movie tonight. I got to take my son to preschool this morning, and play with my daughter. It's an absolutely gorgeous day outside.

Oh, and yes I'm cursing my personal trainer this morning. Turns out I do have stomach muslces after all, and everyone of them is screaming. They're mighty pissed that I woke them up, and made them work. I'm sure once the pain subsides a bit, I'll be thanking my personal trainer, but for now... she is evil!

I'm taking someone's suggestion from another blog about high & low point days. Luckily the day that supposed to be super high is today! Whee! I'm still going to try to make better choices than I used to, but I'm not going to stress about it.

Anyway, hope everyone has a kickass day!

Personal Trainer here I come

Today is my appointment with a personal trainer. I'm actually really excited. I have a gym at work (only $10/month) and she's meeting me here. Previously my workouts in the gym have been a little half-hearted, so I'm hoping this will jack them up. As someone who's been a nerd my whole life and never thought there would ever be anything athletic about me, it'll be great to have someone teach me what I need to do and how to do it properly. So I guess this blog will also be about my journey from couch potato to athlete. I'll update later and let you know how it went.

Update:

Well, my personal trainer was amazing. She never once made me feel bad about not being able to do all the reps. She just said the most important thing is to do as much as I can, and to be able to do more next time. She's got me doing a full body type workout with 20 minutes of cardio first. She's devised some clever methods of torture and I'm sure in a couple of days I'll be cursing her soundly. Anybody tried doing what she calls the plank? Basically you lie on your stomach and then lift yourself up on your forearms and toes and keep your body straight. I'm supposed to be working up to do 1 minute. Eventually I should be able to do 2 minutes. Today, I did... well, um... about 15 seconds. It's supposed to build the transvers abs which help hold the tummy in. I tried to draw a stick man showing the move... I don't think it was very helpful & wouldn't upload, so I found a pic online (not me). Though she looks like she's got her hips too high. Apparently you're supposed to be as flat as a plank. And yes, your whole body is supposed to shake and quiver.

Ready to Go!

I've been working this project for about three weeks at work. It isn't something I normally do, but the person that usually does it resigned unexpectedly and I was asked to finish it. It was three intense weeks of tight deadlines and lots of pressure. The final product was to be delivered to the executive of the company and the executive of the parent company, so I was feeling pretty stressed. The project is finally finished and I feel so much lighter. I'm ready to get back into things. Got me thinking about what I'm looking forward to when I lose my weight. I'd love to hear what others are looking foward to. Here are some of mine:
  1. Being able to wrap a towel around me
  2. Clothes that fit & look cute
  3. Bra's that cost less than $150
  4. Being able to shop anywhere
  5. More energy to play with my kids
  6. Not feeling the need to punch my skinny friends when they complain about how fat they are (right, Michelle?)

Addicted to Blogs

I think I've become addicted to Blogs. Yup, they've replaced my Pepsi addiction (which isn't a bad thing). Since I work on computers all day and often use them in the evenings (email, games, etc.), I find that I'm reading the blogs at least twice a day. The people I've found on these blogs have been wonderful and supportive and since I'm pretty much doing this weight loss thing on my own, they've been just what I need to keep me going. Having someone saying "way to go" or sympathizing with setbacks makes a huge difference. Thanks for the support fellow bloggers!

Now if only I could get my family to actually leave some comments on my kids' site. It's sad that the only comments I've received on that sight have been from you guys.

Anyway, enough sappy crap...

Long Day

Today was a crazy day! My job involves being the finance rep for new system projects within the company I work for. So today was the pilot of one of the bigger projects I have worked on and it also coincinded with the reopening of a store. I went to the store today to see how the new systems were working and ended up staying the whole day and pretty much working with customers. It was insane. There were people lined in the aisles. I've never seen a store so busy outside of boxing day! Since I hadn't been planning on being there all day, I had on office type shoes (i.e. heels), not comfortable shoes. My feet hurt so badly that I can barely walk. Ouch! Did great on points, since I barely had time to eat anything. Despite that it was actually kind of fun to be back in retail (which I haven't done in 9 years). I have the upmost respect for people who work in retail, I don't think I could do it anymore. I'm just not patient enough.

Dinner last night was pretty good. We tried the Tuscan Wine & Garlic chicken from Costco. They're a big bag of individual frozen chicken breasts, which makes them so easy to have on hand and make. This flavour was quite good, flavourful and moist. Feeling great this morning. I got these new jeans a couple weeks ago that are actually flattering, gives me a bit of a butt (I have a pancake ass). So I'm feeling sassy today.

Menu so far:
Breakfast
Rice cakes (2) <--- Really need to come up with something else low point for breakfast soon!!
OJ (1)
Lunch
Subway Roasted Chicken (6) <--- Huge victory, my friend wanted KFC and I didn't fold. We picked up KFC for her and then went to Subway for my lunch!! Woohoo me! Told 'ya I was feeling SASSY!!

Water: 1L/2L

Another Day

The fajitas last night were pretty good, the only problem was that I didn't realize that I had to marinate the chicken for two hours. I was starving by the time we ate dinner. Did great on points yesterday and are you ready for this... I did my Fat Burning Pilates DVD!! My first workout in a week and half (had to wait until I stopped wheezing and coughing). I'm still finding the DVD a bit of struggle to do (can you say burning thighs from bloody squats?), but I did more this time than last time, so I have hopes that one day I'll be able to do the whole thing without whining. Though, I doubt I'll ever get the combinations down, I'm just not that coordinated. Which is why I don't do aerobics classes in public.

Why don't Men Listen?

Is it genetic? Is it taught? I'd really like to know. I've been trying to get my DH to fix the thermostat for the gas fireplace for... oh, about six months. With the wind warning last night, my concern was there might be a power outage and if so we'd need the fireplace to heat the house. He didn't go get the part and didn't even think about it until after the store had closed. And his reason?!? It was windy at the time and he didn't realize that there were wind warnings in effect. Did he think I was making it up for fun? It would have taken him 30 minutes to fix it and it would have made me happy. Apparently sitting on his butt and watching TV were more important. Idiot!

Anyway, enough of my rant. Did horrible on points last night. Used up 15 flex points!! Ouch!! Today's been better and am planning on having a Chicken Fajitas for dinner (WW Recipe). Will let you know how they are. Still haven't made it to the gym (took liquid Benedryl last night for allergy problems and it knocked me out and I slept through my alarm). Will try again tomorrow. I WILL WORKOUT!! No more excuses!! (I hope).
